Insight from stakeholders will help shape the future of bundled payments in the nation’s quest for higher-quality and lower-cost care. Please join Amol Navathe, MD, PhD, and Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania, as they host an exploration of the current evidence and best practices around bundled payments. This free event will start at 8:30 a.m. in the National Press Club’s Murrow-White-Lisagor meeting rooms. Learn More 2018-10-23 12:00:00 2018-10-23 13:00:00 America/New_York Penn Bioethics Seminar | Douglas H Smith, MD Balancing Clinical Research with National Security Concerns: Investigation of Mysterious Neurological Symptoms Douglas H Smith, MD is the Director of the Center for Brain Injury and Repair and Professor of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Penn’s multidisciplined CBIR includes over twenty-five principal investigators and their laboratory staff collectively studying mechanisms, diagnosis and potential treatments of traumatic brain injury. Over the last 18 years, Dr. Smith has devoted his full-time efforts to neurotrauma research following completion of fellowships in both molecular biology and neurotrauma at the University of Connecticut. He has been an active member of the National Neurotrauma Society and currently serves as an officer. In addition, Dr. Smith is director of a multi-center NIH program grant on mild traumatic brain injury and he oversees an NIH training grant for brain injury research. His laboratory’s research interests include investigating the biomechanical effects of traumatic brain injury, imaging techniques to diagnose diffuse axonal injury, and the link between diffuse axonal injury and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Smith’s laboratory has also engineered nervous tissue constructs that have been shown to repair spinal cord and nerve damage. Learn More 2018-10-30 12:00:00 2018-10-30 13:00:00 America/New_York Penn Bioethics Seminar | Ulf Schmidt Seven Days that Changed the World: The Salisbury Nerve Agent Attack and its Aftermath Ulf Schmidt is Professor of Modern History, Director of the Centre for the History of Medicine, Ethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Kent, and principle investigator of the Porton Down Project on the history of chemical warfare research during the Cold War. Professor Schmidt is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He was previously Wellcome Trust Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, and Senior Associate Member of St Antony’s College, Oxford University. In 2004 Professor Schmidt was appointed by HM Coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon as one of the principle expert witnesses on informed consent in the Inquest looking into the death of Leading Aircraftman Ronald Maddison, a British serviceman, who died after being exposed to the nerve agent Sarin in 1953. While their doctors and military officials deny any connection between the experiment and their diagnoses, Noam (Udi Persi), Sheli (Dana Meinrath), Dani (Ziv Peleg), Avivi (Lior Hasson), and Shai (Amit Epstein) resolve to learn the truth. With their health quickly deteriorating and a massive cover-up on their hands, they don’t have much time to assure that those responsible for what happened to them are held accountable for their crimes. With its “found footage” style cinematography, ANTHRAX is all the more frightening in that it’s based on true events. After the Care Crisis

The lion’s share of caregiving within and outside of families is done by women and they receive little to no pay, nor recognition for it. Women represent over 80% of childcare workers, over 90% of home care workers, and over 95% of domestic workers. Many of them are Black and migrant women. Their wages are at the bottom of economic distribution and current laws undermine their access to basic labor rights. Furthermore, women provide over 70% of full-time unpaid care work. That is, women providing care in the home receive no compensation and, moreover, give up jobs and economic autonomy to do it. These care contradictions are at a breaking point. Care workers are organizing to ask for equal rights and better pay. Women and families are demanding collective responsibility over care, just as they are demanding labor alternatives that address care needs without economically bankrupting women. Women are saying enough to providing care for free, enough to providing care for poverty wages. “After the Care Crisis” seeks to imagine alternative ways of organizing care that put an end to this deeply unjust system that relies on pervasive feminization, racialization, and devaluation. Researchers, activists, and policy advocates will discuss current contradictions in care work and ongoing campaigns looking to transform it in the direction of justice and equity. Participants will include the United Home Care Workers’ of PA, the Pennsylvania Domestic Workers Alliance, the National Domestic Workers’ Alliance, Hand in Hand the domestic employers’ network, researchers across the social sciences and humanities, and a keynote address by economist Nancy Folbre.
